Innocent drive to Baton Rouge, almost got killed…
Main Post:
I’m trying to love it here, I really am. I go outside in the evening to chat it up with my neighbors, I have been going to local things that interest me to meet people. I try to be friendly and nice BUT it seems like the universe is telling me I don’t belong here. I decided to drive to Baton Rouge (am I the only one who avoids the causeway???) bc I needed to shop for upcoming family wedding. On the way I saw a driver of a F350 black truck REVERSING into 70 mph traffic bc he apparently didn’t want THAT particular exit. Great example of why LA’s insurance rates are high. Don’t get me started on all the jokers that set their cruise control at 65 in the passing lane!!! On the way home I almost got killed when 2 trucks blew by me at 70+ mph and 2 cars were merging at same speed. There was no where for me to go-had to slam on the brakes. Why are there no acceleration lanes in these busy sections of interstate? Why don’t merging cars LOOK before flying into traffic? I told my 16 yo grandson if he can manage driving here, he can literally drive ANYwhere.

This isn’t unique to Baton Rouge or Louisiana, go drive through saint louis for cunts speeding on either side of you going 30 over. Or in Texas where the semi’s will try to over take you in the right lane to get another 100 feet further ahead
One night in either Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Shreveport or Lake Charles

How would you rank these for strictly food and nightlife? I will not have the time to explore anything during the day as I am driving to Dallas. Just looking for good food and preferably bars with live music. Thanks!

Lafayette is number 1, Baton Rouge is number 2, then Lake Charles, then the moon, then Shreveport.
Job Interview in Baton Rouge
Main Post:
What’s up y’all ? I’m 25 and currently live about 3 hours north of Baton Rouge, small town of maybe 2000 people. I’m scheduled to be at a job interview in Baton Rouge Thursday, I have transportation, I have a few dollars. I’m planning to arrive in the city Wednesday and stay a night at a hotel, due to some earlier obligations that start at 5 AM, just hoping for some good suggestions on hotels in a safe place. Also if all goes well, I’ll be moving to Baton Rouge, any suggestions on safe and quality apartments within or not far from Baton Rouge ? I’m aiming for about 19/hr and expect a 60 hour work week.

Shenandoah is a pretty safe area in general. I used to live in ivy park apartments on jones creek/tiger bend. Those were fairly economically priced for the area. You can definitely hear your upstairs neighbors though. Rent was around $800 or so. Not sure about hotels
Edit: definitely pick an apartment closer to where you work. Traffic is insane here
Has anyone heard about the new town created near Baton Rouge? Why was the involvement of Supreme Court necessary?
Main Post:
So my brother sent me an article about the creation of a new town just outside of Baton Rouge called St. George. The article was from fox news which I know is controversial for some people but I can link it if anyone is interested. The article mentioned that the legal case for creating the town went all the way to the Supreme Court. But why would it be necessary to go to the Supreme Court just to create a town ? Has anyone else read or heard about and have any explanations or thoughts ?

In a nutshell....
After the 2nd attempt to create a new city, the mayor-president and a metro council member sued saying the St George organizers misled the public and didn’t have an adequate financial plan for a new city and that its incorporation would have long-term negative effects for the parish as a whole. The lower court agreed. The St George organizers filed an appeal. The appeals court agreed with the lower court’s ruling. The St George organizers got the LA supreme court to hear the case. They reversed the lower court’s decision.
Baton Rouge?

Is anyone going to the show in Baton Rouge this weekend? I'm in Fort Lauderdale and haven't seriously considered doing the drive, but I just saw Craig's IG post from Charlotte and am starting to get a case of FOMO. Don't like doing shows (or road trips) alone as much as I used to, but maybe if there was the potential to make some new music friends or something I might talk myself into it? Just throwing it out there before I slam the door on the idea officially.

Life in the Deep South (Baton Rouge)
Main Post:
If this gets removed, that’s fine, I know it isn’t the typical post for this sub. But there have been many discussions lately about the lack of insight many seem to have on certain parts of the country, so I thought maybe this would be illuminating
I currently live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I have previously lived in NYC, central PA, the Willamette Valley, Pensacola, and Istanbul.
Life in Baton Rouge. I live in a downtown apartment in the nicest building in town and pay $1800/mo for a 1k sqft 1 bedroom. Other than lacking a doorman, it is a true luxury apartment. Other places in town are cheaper. Median home price here is a little over $200k.
Downtown BR has restaurants and a full grocery store that I can walk to. I used to work for the State (Baton Rouge is the state capitol and most state buildings are downtown) and would walk to work. Now I WFH. I used to live in an older neighborhood that is adjacent to downtown. The people that live there are just as liberal and wild as my neighbors were in the willamette valley.
On average, I’d say a drive once a week. There isn’t a good hardware store downtown or doctor’s offices. Traffic here is very bad for a city of its size (800k population MSA) due to the sprawl and lack of urban planning.
The weather here is better than I think people give it credit for. Yes, summers are long and hot and humid. The thunderstorms and hurricanes are no joke. But we get a ton of sunshine year round. Spring, fall, and winter are all very pleasant. I went rollerblading yesterday and it was 70 degrees and sunny.
Food here is very good, especially if you are into Louisiana/southern food. But it’s pretty diverse. Very good Indian food here. There is a huge Lebanese population here so there are a ton of awesome Lebanese/Mediterranean restaurants. Lots of Vietnamese here also so good Vietnamese restaurants.
There is an airport here with most of the major carriers. Not a ton of flight options but it’s nice having an airport 15 min away and I’ve never waited for more than 5 min to get through security. And the New Orleans airport is an hour away and has a lot more flight options.
Access to nature is not great but not awful. The bike path along the Mississippi River is nice. The LSU lakes are nice. There is a great parks system here but more geared towards families than nature access. If you’re willing to drive an hour, there are much better hiking, cycling options.
Baton Rouge is fairly diverse, certainly more diverse than where I lived in Oregon or Pennsylvania. The city is majority black. I also hear way less casual racism here than I did in Oregon or Pennsylvania.
People here generally don’t talk politics publicly, everybody just wants to have a good time eating and drinking. Social life here evolves around eating, drinking, and LSU sports (especially football). There are tons of fun and free community events (Mardi Gras, St Patrick’s Day parade, festivals throughout south Louisiana).
This place is far from perfect, but I think it and many other similar cities would be a better fit for many people than this sub usually suggests.

I could use some good Louisiana food right now.
Good & bad parts of Baton Rouge ?
Main Post:
Just moved from outta state & looking to buy a house in ascension parish or denham springs. Didn’t know if Baton Rouge was a no go or not. Thoughts ?
Top Comment:
Depends on who you ask, and what you want. You tend to see Facebook posts from that region saying that Baton Rouge is a warzone and they fear for their lives when they visit "the city" etc etc. In reality, there are good and bad parts of every city everywhere.
If you want more to do, you should probably locate within EBR parish or BR proper.
If you want more space / a bigger house for a somewhat better price, and generally better school districts if you have kids, Ascension and Denham may be your route.
Again, depends on what you want. I grew up in a small town so I don't want to move somewhere with less to do - but that's me. You can also look up crime stats on places like Open Neighborhood BR.
Worth visiting Baton Rouge on the way down to New Orleans?
Main Post:
Hey all, Chicagoan here. We are planning on driving down to New Orleans and are hitting up major cities on the way down.
We were wondering if Baton Rouge would be worth a visit? It would be an extra hour of driving, but we’re willing to do it if there is a must see there.
Top Comment:
Oh, you'll "Visit" alright. For about an hour and half while you wait to get out of the stupid traffic. After that, you'll never want to return.
Anyone here lived in Baton Rouge and New Orleans?
Main Post:
I have considered the move. Looking at a job opportunity now. I feel like NOLA is a better city for twenty somethings. More things to do. Any avenues for sports? I think it might be better for dating too. But what are the downsides?

I had my apartment broken into and cleaned out while living in BR and was sexually assaulted (2 diff crimes), and also had an AutoZone employee steal my debit card info and clean out my account while I lived in BR. In my whole time in NO, someone stole something from garden once and that’s the only police report I’ve filled out here.
